The employees of the former Clinical Center, now the Mother Teresa Clinical Complex, were members of the Independent Union for Health, Pharmacy, and Social Policy at the Federation of Trade Unions of Macedonia. There were three basic organizational units within the union: one for employees at the Medical Faculty, one for employees in the clinics, and one for employees in the institutes. The union organization at the clinical center had over 2,700 members. Thanks to the then director of the clinical center, Prof. Dr. Ilija Dzhonov, in 1998 and 1999, two offices were provided and fully equipped for the rich activities of the union organization.
The members of the union organization at the then Clinical Center were not satisfied with the treatment they received from the leadership of the Independent Union, as the largest union organization within the Union. The dissatisfaction reached its peak when, for the congress of the Independent Union, the union organization at the clinical center was allocated only four delegates. Furthermore, their proposal for the president or vice president of the Independent Union for Health, Pharmacy, and Social Protection to be from their ranks was not accepted.
Unsatisfied with the attitude of three members of the Union from the clinical center—Ratko Stankovski, Dr. Angelche Sazdovski, and Risto Spirov—they initiated the formation of a new union. Initially, the idea of forming a new union was joined by members of four or five union branches of the then Independent Union.
At the last congress held in May 2014, the Independent Union of Clinical Centers and Other Health Organizations in the Republic of North Macedonia changed its name and is now the Independent Union of Employees in University Clinics, Centers, Clinical Hospitals, and Other Public Health Institutions in the Republic of North Macedonia.
The first president of the Independent Union was Dr. Angelche Sazdovski. The second president is Dr. Dejan Stavrikj, and the third is Dr. Goran Begovich.
At the time of the first congress, the new union in the healthcare sector in the country, the Independent Union of Clinical Centers and Other Health Organizations in the Republic of North Macedonia, had 3,200 members.
The first congress was held in March 2002 at the Palace Hotel in Ohrid. The first president was Dr. Angelche Sazdovski.
The Independent Union of Employees in University Clinics, Centers, Clinical Hospitals, and Other Public Health Institutions in the Republic of North Macedonia (SSKTC) elected Dr. Predrag Serafimoski as the president of the union at its Sixth Congress held on April 5, 2023. The union currently has over 5,400 members and 58 union organizations.
